Learning Martine Vaugel's technique on portraiture allows for quick, accurate and beautiful anatomically correct depictions.
She has sculpted portraits of Ghandi, John Lennon as well as Sylvester Stallone among Duchesses and other public figures.
A generalized skull showing the correct angles of connection between the high places is how we began.
It is the secret to doing a fast portraiture, you get the high points and angles, with the bone structure correct the rest falls into place.
We then looked at the series of pictures of me from 8 angles to find the correct relationship geometrically between each high point on one side then balanced the other side. I chose to do a self portraiture so I could reference additionally if need be.
We added in high points across the different views, balanced, then connected them, creating the correct shadows and volumes by checking from all angles and not over packing. Martine worked on a demonstration portrait and I worked on my own.
Relying on angles already found, I added in details whilst learning how to make eyes look accurately rounded and give them the glass eye effect.
I got to the details of the lips and eyebrows at the end along with hair darks and lights and general shapes.
What an amazing week we had! We both pushed ourselves to the max so that I could learn as much as I could in such a short space. It was so nice to be so appreciated and loved by an artist who I look up to, we really clicked and I appreciated the huge amount of techniques she shared and all the many stories that I could learn from and for entertainments sake that were told. Lots of love to Martine.
After the best transportation I could manage with still workable clay, it is back in my home studio with work to mount it on a base and to correct the damages from travel which the nose took. It has been nice to sit with it and alter it at more of a leisurely pace then the stressful work packed days of the workshop.
And, of course being in the Loire Valley, I had to go around and see the magnificent castles and thank my mom for flying out to join me. It was a magical trip, fairytale trip! Me at our favorite, Chenonceau.
